This course explores the Irish Famine (1845–1852) through the lens of human rights and genocide studies, combining rigorous academic work with travel through Ireland’s striking landscapes. Using Tim Pat Coogan’s The Famine Plot as a central text, students will visit historic sites, museums, and archives across Dublin, Skibbereen, and Birr, tracing the profound effects of the Great Hunger. Homestays offer a chance to connect with local families, experience Irish culture firsthand, and see how communities today remember and honor their history. Along the way, students will witness the beauty of Ireland’s rolling hills, rugged coastlines, and charming towns, enriching both their understanding of history and their appreciation of the country.
