Arrival Orientation

Sonoma State International Programs provides 2 types of orientations which are both mandatory.

The first is an online Pre-Arrival Orientation course which students must complete before they arrive at Sonoma State. Our Pre-Arrival Orientation covers all of the important information you need to know in order for you to have a successful start in your program.

Our On-Campus Orientation generally takes place right before school starts and brings together all international students from all programs as well as our NSE students. We offer a campus tour, activities to get to know your fellow students and support staff as well as a review of important information for your programs.

Between both Orientations, we cover the topics listed below as well as provide community-connecting programing.

  • American/Californian Culture
  • Safety in the U.S.
  • Local transportation and amenities
  • Campus life and activities (tour included)
  • Immigration requirements
  • Forms and document scanning (bring your passport/visa and I-20/DS-2019)
  • Academic advising and registration
  • Online resources
  • Health insurance and healthcare in the U.S.
  • Title IX training

As most new students don’t have cars, we also provide an optional shopping trip to Target where you can purchase everything you need that you couldn’t fit in a suitcase. Housing Services provides a helpful list of What to Bring to your on-campus residences. We are also sometimes able to offer additional, optional trips to explore the local area, such as visiting the Santa Rosa Wednesday Night Market or Armstrong Woods National Reserve.
