Halloween Around the World

October 31st is Halloween and countries around the globe love this spooky holiday. While The United States is known for celebrating with haunted houses, costumes, and trick or treating, some may not know that Halloween originated in Ireland. Halloween is based on a Celtic celebration called Samhain, which marked the beginning of a new year. Today the Irish celebrate with card games and barmbrack. Latin American countries also have their own way of celebrating where the 31st is a night of mischief in which the dead may return to earth. This is followed by two days of festivals until November 2nd, the Day of the Dead. This is an occasion where the memory of lost loved ones are celebrated joyfully. China has a similar tradition, where food, water, and lanterns are placed in front of photos of departed relatives to help them travel home for the night of Halloween.
